"It tells the story of Prince Dmitri Ivanovich Nekhlyudov, a nobleman who becomes disillusioned with his life of privilege after serving on a jury that convicts a young woman, Maslova, of a crime she did not commit. Years later, Nekhlyudov encounters Maslova again in a prison, where she is serving time for a different crime. Moved by her suffering and his own guilt over his role in her conviction, Nekhlyudov decides to help her and ultimately seeks redemption for his own sins."
