The Barber of Seville and the Marriage of Figaro

Beaumarchais was a man of immense wit and feeling and it is our loss that his two great plays are only known to us through Rossini and Mozart. It was Beaumarchais who brought fun back into the theatre and broke the convention of formality which had grown up since Moliere.
