The Lottery in Babylon

Short Story

The Lottery in Babylon

Jorge Luis Borges

In a city ruled by chance, a mysterious lottery evolves from a simple game of luck into a totalitarian force that governs every aspect of life—rewarding, punishing, and reshaping reality itself. As the system deepens, the line between choice and fate blurs, leaving citizens to question whether randomness is an illusion or the ultimate form of control.

Quite a disconcerting read. Borges deftly dances around the ideas of agency and autonomy by diving into a world in which chance (or the Company) is God.

Should give this another read in the future.
